Default help with new bike choice please, your comments welcome.......

im ditching the dukeII its a total blast to ride, more enjoyable than anysports bike no question, but! i commute every day on it & it involves occasional motorway work which lets face it aint the duke's forte.
anyway at the moment when i sell it i'll make a loss of several hundres pounds but hey **** happens! the 2 bikes ive got my eye on seem like good deals but which is the best bet.

W reg R1, with low miles, mint, about a grands worth of underseat exhaust & single seat.
Y reg Gsxr1000 with crescent paint job & a few ohlins bits but nothing too ott, with tri oval system i think.

which is the best bet????? the gsxr is £5k & the R1£4k

thanks

GSXR , even though I prefer the look of the R1 to the K1/K2 GSXRthous....

the Thous handle better and low mileage or not, sooner rather than later the r1 will start using oil...and it sounds like its been owned by the bike equivalent of the "Lax Power" enthusiast..IMHO

indeed, it does have a few "choice" mods like the mini indicators etc too. is it common for R1's to uise oil then? how serious a concern is it?

Both would be a killer to commute on around town, but I'd have to go for the R1 as Suzuki's tend to have build quality issues..but you would find this out after your first winter on it

Both nice bikes but R1 looks nicer, don't forget to factor in price of matching helmet and clothing unless you just go black

cCheck which has best service history

Oh yes, its common for most yammie big bore sports bikes to use oil, EXUP, YZF,Ace, R1, most will end up being oil burners...I read once it was something to do with the way they cast the pistons...

Im not sure about that , but my EXUP, YZF and mates R1 were oil burners within 10,000K, the YZF in fact started to burn tons of it by the 5K mark

Flogged them both for that reason, I wouldnt buy a Yammie now.

MCN reported a couple of months back their 04 r1 had started to use oil...But then again, you could get lucky, some dont, most seem to...

If the GSXR is a K2 model with the stainless headers/back part of the system, the finish is the equal of the Yams

The K1 also suffered with the gold coating on the forks coming off, should have been done under warranty by Suzuki now anyway..

Instead of replacing a bike you are happy with ( and losing money ) can you not maybe fit bar risers/heated grips/comfy seat etc.

Just a thought,

R1 or Gixer are going to be completely alien riding pos compared to a KTM Duke.. and possibly not any more comfortable... e.e arse up head down, only thing u wont get is as much windblast.
You might find an '03 ktm950 for that price range.. its a urban holigan tool that can do 130 without tryiing to rip your head off (been there seen it done)

this is actually my 2nd dukeII & just love the bike to bits, i have issues about using it everyday thats all, i sometime go from home to watford, then to bracknell. or watford central london twice a week despite the love i have for the bike it just isnt the best tool for the job, i had an r1 for about 8months & loved it, had no oil issues. the gsxr 1000 is an early 2001 so a K1 i guess. i really need a bike that will just be a useful every day hacker really, but want jap sports. i suppose the real answer is another blade?
cheers, i'll post pics in the next few days no doubt with the new steed.

Thumbs up

Well done met,

Been watching thread with interest, I use my R1 (02) daily in most weathers as the missus use the Scoob. No probs with oil consumption either, you will need to keep on top of cleaning it though, regularly. Great bike, I've not looked back.

While in for it's 1st MOT last week I had a look at and had a go on a 54 plate Triumph Tiger as an additional bike, 955i triple sound and was most impressed. When I get to 50 I could be persuaded.

regards to all bikers

Dave
