Default WRX MY03 - Best 350+/350+ upgrade?

Hi,

I currently have an MY03 WRX with PPP. Very nice, but it's coming towards the end of the warranty period now so I'm looking to indulge my desire to up the performance a touch. I want to keep this car, not trade it in and would consider an engine etc transplant if absolutely necessary.

Ideally, looking for a 350bhp+ / 350lb/ft+ upgrade. Not too concerned about fuel economy but it's a daily driver so nothing too exotic and I'd prefer 'tried and tested' from a recommended conversion specialist. I have WRC Tech just down the road, but will travel for the right 'grin factor injection' (GFI).

Has anyone had a GFI along these lines that could give me a few pointers? Any advice appreciated.

Cheers
NXG

You could do a lot worse than get yourself a copy of the latest Scooby magazine, it describes exactly what you are asking about.

Wouldn't be one of yours in there would it Andy?

Anyway, good suggestion, thanks. Actually saw the banner at the top of the page just after I posted this last night and signed up for 12 months starting at back issue 4. Got the one with a binder as I'd like to be able to reference them!

Do you (or anyone else reading this) have experience of the sort of upgrade I'm looking at?

Cheers

I am sure Andy has a 'little' experience in this field... LOL

You could consider getting an TD05 18g turbo, accompanied by STI TMIC, Full Decat Exhaust, Headers and Up-pipe, 565cc Injectors, Fuel Pump, Filter and Tek3 remap.

That should give you plenty of GFI and a very nice 'daily driver'.

Enjoy

Yea, what that man says, although I may stick with ported OE headers for an earlier boost hit

Thanks for the replies guys. What sort of power/torque would this work produce? Any idea on a 'guide price' for a proper job?

Rough Guide price £3k - £3.5k (based on new parts prices) plus labour costs for fitting

Yep......Gotta agree with Ninnybobs on this one but don't forget......... silicone hoses to keep the boost from splitting the pipes, better oil for the temps, wrap the pipes and some better spark plugs

Just leave a few quid for some tasteful mods

Midlife and Ninnybobs have made over that figure although they also have a fmic in their spec.

My 03 WRX is currently running 340/340 on the next size down turbo, remainder of spec as above.

Can't recommend Andy enough for his mapping skills and knowledge.

Top bloke!

I'd travel hundreds of miles extra just to have him map it.

Thanks for the suggestions. So far I have:

TD05 18g turbo (from Andy F)
STI TMIC or APS FMIC (BIG difference in price but am tempted due to install issues of bigger TMIC)
Full Decat Exhaust, Headers and Up-pipe (how much of the PPP kit can I keep?)
565cc Injectors
Fuel Pump (assume Walbro?)
Filter
Tek3 remap
Ported OE headers
Silicone hoses (assume Samco)
Better oil (err, like what?)
Wrapped pipes (plus heat paint to stop water)
Uprated spark plugs (any advice?)
Remap by Andy or Bob (put in alphabetical order) ... :-)

+
Any mileage in fitting some kind of auto water spray for the I/C?
Parallel fuel lines (as per a comment from Andy F on 911s build)

=
GFI north of 350/350.

Think I need to do a bit more trawling, but would like to know what people think of the above..

Cheers.

Just done a very similar upgrade for my wagon (03 WRX PPP) using:

Remap by Paul @ Zen Performance, Wellingborough. I asked for a daily driver with no vices & wouldn't threaten the std gearbox.

STi IC
VF35. Ported.
STi pinkies
GM 3 port solenoid
STi Gp N filter.
colder plugs.
Ported exhaust manifold
STi OEM up-pipe. Ported.
Prodrive open mouth bellmouth sports cat d/pipe.
Prodrive fuel pump
JDM STi inlet manifold. TGV delete plus porting
Snorkelectomy.

Parts were source mainly from Ebay both as new or s/hand. Total cost inc mapping was £2100 but didn't inlcude my time (fitting & porting).

I kept the WRX scoop but adjusted an STi splitter to fit.
Also kept the PPP rear box & centre section.
Getting rid of the TGV CELs proved tricky and had input from Ecutek (thanks Merv).

The resuts were:

This compares the std PPP output with the above work. At the time of the PPP road dyno, it gave book figures on the PE rolling road.
I was expecting to sacrifice torque at 2-3k but ther is actually an improvement in reponse. Fuel consumption has improved to nearly 30 mpg on the long trips I do.

Your choice of turbo may get the bhp figure you're after but perhaps sacrifice a bit of low down torque?

Any scooby competent mechanic can fit the parts as they are a direct bolt-on. Shop around for the best hourly rates, a previous customer was pleasently surprised at his local dealers pricing for fitting a turbo and injectors I supplied him.

I wouldn't bother with the TGV delete, I think they actually make better torque with them in place and with over 300bhp on the td04 they don't appear to restrict power either

What fitting issues ? The Sti tmic just bolts on to your year of car, all you need is a mod to the scoop undertray or fit the Sti tray.

Hi Nick,

Just a quick question but which curve is which?? I take it you have compared the 2 on road dynos......just seems that one is a lot more progressive than the other, would that be correct?

are you happy with the 280? if its the curve i think it is then it looks nice and smooth, but would have to reconsider the expense for the relative gain. but please dont take that the wrong way as it looks very well set up by Pavlo.

I do appreciate your aprehension about the gearbox.

Neil,
The scarlet and reddy brown lines are bhp/torque for the std PPP. At about the same time it was also run at PE and produced figures as Prodrive intended (265/260?). The delta dash output is power @ wheels. If a 25% tansmission loss is put onto the delta dash figures then it appears to match the PE output.

The light & dark greeny blue lines are for the recent work. This indicates a wheel power increase of approx 70 hp . Applying the 25% loss figure, this gives something like 350/332, but the run was carried out at 5 deg C as opposed to the PPP run @ 17 deg C last year.
I'm sure there are other interpretations of these figures though
A trip to a rolling road has been recommended.

One thing that does puzzle me on the latest run is that the data after 5800 rpm is missing although after the run, delta dash showed the max revs was 6128. Anyone say what happened?

Whatever the figures are, it has made a very driveable car. In gear times (3rd gear) have all dropped by at least 0.5 secs and that was on a cold and damp day.

My aim was to make a sort of JDM STi wagon since they aren't made any more.
Anyway, big thanks to Paul for the time & effort he has put into this.

Not sure. Two of the above posters are running 370 and 400 bhp with them still fitted.

Regards the drive losses on Deltadash, they are not 25%, only rolling roads create that sort of drag !
For 300-400bhp cars, DD is usually in the 16-18% range for peak power and 13-15% for peak torque correction to flywheel figures. Of course this depends upon which rolling road you use

Your power is clipped at either end as Paul has used heavy smoothing, this effectively narrows the measured power band.

Hi Nick,

Might have seen you about if you're from the Northants area. That's a nice list and I especially like the term for pipework mods you have there.

I must be greedy through as I have to make 350/350 min..

Cheers

Yes, you're right, had a brain f@rt whilst I was looking through 911s conversion from last year and forgot I have an MY03 not a classic. Doh.

Will an STI TMIC handle 350+ though? It'll be right on its limit won't it?

Nick has his own copy of deltadash, and produced the graphs himself. We have a dyno dynamics rolling road round the corner to use now, so I dare say we will see some proper power figures.

Paul

Latest:

Had the first back issues of Scooby Magazie drop through the door today and have already read issues 4 and 5 (went to the beginning of Andy F's feature!). Very impressed and it's packed full of useful info. Can't wait to get up to date.

It's all well and good seeing all the parts available in magazines and on the net and trying to judge their relative merits on by how big a dent they'll put in your bank balance using the theory that the more expensive stuff is better, but seeing the kit installed and being able to relate to it with respect to your own vehicle and budget is something else.

I suppose I'm probabl preaching to the converted here but if you haven't got a sub to this mag, get one now!

Anyway, the latest list is:

TD05 18g turbo (from Andy F) - Note: Tempted by the 20g Andy! ~£850 (less exchange?)
STI MY01-> TMIC (~£350 used or £650 new from APS inc duct)
Full 3" decat exhaust, tubular headers and up-pipe (~£500) (how much of the PPP kit can I keep? Is any of it 3"?)
Phase 3 565cc Injectors (~£300)
Fuel Pump (Walbro 255L/hr ~£100)
Filter
Tek3 remap (Andy F)
Ported OE headers (source and cost?)
Silicone hoses (Samco ~£350 full set)
Better oil (Silkolene Pro R 15W-50? ~£11 for 5 ltr)
Wrapped pipes plus heat paint to stop water (~£50)
Uprated spark plugs (Splitfire Platinum? ~£40 set)
Magnecor HT lead set (~£80)
APS cold air feed (~£160)

Any mileage in fitting some kind of auto water spray for the I/C?

Haven't had time to upgrade the list with what I've learnt from the SM articles yet. Stay tuned (can't believe I wrote that).

Plug wise NGK PRF7B's are the one's to got for (~£40 sparkplugs.co.uk)
STI TMIC: you want the MY03> (aka sti8>)
I'd advise the matching scoop (as well as splitter) to make most of uprated TM.
OEM ported headers £100 exchange from Harvey
Don't see why you need plug lead set..? scoobs use coilpacks..!
APS cold air feed not nec. IMHO Uprated panel filter (Green/KN) more than sufficient for your target.
Uprated STI TMIC comes with alloy 'y' pipe and samco elbow so strictly speaking you don't need to upgrade any other pipework.

This should save unecessary expence and keep cost/gains more respectable.

Most of this advice is from people who have tried and tested what works and what dosen't.
